Bronte By Moon
Abraham Moon and Sons have one of the last remaining vertical woollen mills in Great Britain.
We stock their Bronte by Moon pure new Merino lambswool and slightly cheaper pure new Shetland lambswool products, chosen for the consistent quality and innovative, inspirational designs. Both wools have similar properties, with slight differences.
Merino is a type of sheep, originally established in Spain, but now predominantly from New Zealand and Australia, where they thrive in the arid climate and conditions. Merino wool has many excellent properties:
- Soft: Merino fibres are extremely fine and flexible, making the fabric feel soft and luxurious.
- Breathable: the fibres can absorb moisture, wicking it away from the body to evaporate on the fabric surface for more comfort. An added bonus is that this also minimises static, so the fabric doesn't cling where it shouldn't
- Odour resistant: the natural properties minimise odour producing bacteria growth
Shetland wool again comes from a particular breed of sheep, originally from the Shetland Islands. The harsher climate has meant that the wool has evolved to suit. Shetland wool properties:
- Soft: Shetland fibres are thicker than Merino, so not quite as soft
- Hard wearing: thicker fibres are slightly stronger
- Warm and breathable: ideal for layering in cold weather. The crimped nature of the fibres help trap air and make the material more elastic
